The off-going watchkeeper briefs the on-coming crew on every item. The on-coming watch must acknowledge understanding before taking command.

2. Sail plan and any planned changes
3. Wind speed, direction, and sea state
4. Traffic and vessels on AIS/radar
5. Current position and distance to next waypoint
6. Bilge water level and pump status
7. Battery state of charge and solar input
8. Engine hours since last check and fuel level
9. Any defects, unusual noises, or observations
10. Galley status — stove off, gas secured
11. Crew resting and any medical concerns
12. Expected weather changes or hazards ahead

Rest & Safety Rules

Wake the next crew 10–15 minutes early for handover.
Enforce minimum 6 hours uninterrupted rest per 24-hour cycle.
In heavy weather, reduce watch length to 2–3 hours.
Reassess the watch bill every 24 hours or when conditions change.
Fatigue impairs judgement as much as alcohol. Enforce rest periods strictly. This tool provides general guidance only — the operator is responsible for vessel and crew safety.
